Trustees approve school consolidation proposal

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Board of Trustees tonight approved the district’s school consolidation proposal with a 6 to 1 vote. The vote approved the consolidation of Central Elementary, Furneaux Elementary, McCoy Elementary and Long Middle schools, as well as new attendance zones.

“Like many Texas districts, CFBISD had a very tough decision to make,” said Board President Randy Schackmann. “From declining birth rates, state funding cuts, alternative school options and more, we refuse to sit by and must overcome these challenges. We want our district to continue to be a place where our students have the opportunity to reach their maximum potential.”

The approval will save the district up to $9 million within the first year and reduce 2,300 empty seats. The majority of CFBISD campuses will see some adjustments within their attendance zones, which have not been updated in more than 20 years. Most students are anticipated to remain at their current school.

All impacted staff members will have positions within the district. While specific assignments may change due to rezoning, consolidation or district needs, the goal is to provide every employee with a role that aligns with their certification and expertise.

Students who currently attend Central, Furneaux, McCoy or Long will attend their new campus beginning in the fall of the 2025-2026 school year.

“Tonight’s vote weighs heavy on all of us,” said Superintendent Dr. Wendy Eldredge. “My heart is with all of our CFB family. This is something nobody wants to go through, and I want to express my gratitude to our families and community for their input. At the end of the day, I believe that we all want what is best for our students.”

Next steps

Online enrollment for CFBISD opens April 1, 2025. The district will keep families and staff informed throughout the transition.

Each consolidated campus will continue to receive district support. Special ceremonies to honor and commemorate the four campuses as well as welcome events at receiving schools will be planned for students, staff and the community. Those plans will be shared with our CFB communities once details are in place.

Counseling services are available for all CFBISD students, families and staff.
