Jayden Samuel, a recent graduate of Ranchview High School, took center stage this summer at one of the world's most iconic music venues — the Sydney Opera House — as a finalist in the prestigious Honors Performance Series.
Samuel became the first Ranchview student to earn a spot in the international program, which brings together top student musicians from around the globe to perform under the direction of master conductors at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Festival Hall and the Sydney Opera House.
The Honors Performance Series accepts only 25–35% of applicants each year. Students are nominated by their educators and must demonstrate exceptional musical ability. Samuel, who was an Area Band member in 2024 and 2025 and an All-State musician in 2025, earned his place after a rigorous two-round audition process that included a video submission and performance of advanced audition materials reviewed by a national selection panel.
During the series, Samuel performed under the direction of Dr. Gregory X. Whitmore, associate director of bands at California State University, Fullerton. In addition to rehearsals and performances, the program offers students and their families cultural enrichment experiences, as well as professional development opportunities for participating educators.
This marks only the second time a CFBISD student has been selected for the Honors Performance Series. The first was Lorentz Platt, a current Ranchview band student who was nominated while attending Barbara Bush Middle School.
Ranchview Band Director Jarred Carlton, who accompanied Samuel to Australia, credited the achievement to years of growth and commitment within the school’s music program.
“Our program has achieved state-level accolades, including being named the 14th best 4A varsity wind ensemble in Texas in 2023,” he said. “To have a student represent Ranchview and CFBISD on a world-renowned stage is history in the making.”
Carlton emphasized the importance of continued support for the arts.
“The message of stability and support from our district leadership has never wavered,” he expressed. “The arts are essential, and truly, the world is full of opportunity through music.”
Samuel will study pre-med and music studies at Baylor University this fall, having been awarded a music and leadership scholarship. He hopes this experience can inspire other young musicians in the district to pursue their passions.
