Lessy Cruz is ready to make her mark. A graduating senior at Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD’s Early College High School, Cruz will be the first in her family to earn an associate degree and embark on the journey to a four-year university. This fall, she plans to attend St. Edward's University in Austin to study neuroscience.
Born in El Salvador, Cruz spent her early childhood there, attending kindergarten before her parents moved the family to the United States when she was five. She has spent all of her high school years at ECHS and eagerly anticipates her graduation on May 16.
"Knowing I’ll be the first in my family to not only earn an associate degree but also go to college is a really special feeling," Cruz said. "It can feel a little overwhelming at times, but I'm so grateful for my parents' support. They've always encouraged me to succeed and do my best."
When asked about her sources of inspiration, Cruz spoke of the unwavering support of her stepfather and mother.
"My stepdad is truly selfless,” she expressed. "He stepped into my life and has been an amazing support for our whole family. My mom was a single mom for many years, often working three jobs at once just to provide for my sister and me. I appreciate all that my parents have done for me."
Reflecting on her high school experience, Cruz described the teachers who impacted her education.
"All of my teachers have been so supportive, but my math teacher, Mr. Dunn, really stands out," she said. "He's been one of my absolute favorites and an incredible mentor. He also leads DECA, which has built my confidence and helped me with public speaking."
As an active and accomplished member of DECA, (Distributive Education Clubs of America), Cruz proudly represented her school as a semifinalist at the state competition this year.
For Cruz, the drive to become independent and build a successful career fuels her ambition. A dedicated worker, she is already planning to juggle multiple jobs this summer to save for college. Notably, she recently achieved the significant milestone of paying off her car, and has already been awarded several scholarships.
“My biggest dream is to help my mom and stepdad retire,” she said. “After everything they’ve done for me, I want to be financially successful enough to help them. My niece is also incredibly special to me, and I’m excited to support her and watch her grow."
When asked about the most impactful piece of advice she has received, Cruz recalled a valuable lesson.
“One of my former teachers, Mr. Crook, always said, ‘Failure is not fatal, but failure to change may be,’ and that really stuck with me,” she said. “I try to live by that every day, constantly pushing myself to learn and grow."
For other students who find themselves as the first in their families to pursue higher education, Cruz offered straightforward and encouraging words.
“Just go for it,” she said. “It’s going to be challenging, and you might stumble along the way. But always give it your best effort and communicate with your teachers. It’s okay to ask for help.”
