"We are thrilled to celebrate Avahan for placing in the International Geography Bee," said Vicky Cisneros, DeWitt Perry Principal. “This remarkable achievement speaks volumes about his dedication, knowledge and enthusiasm for learning about the world around us. Competing at such a high level is no small feat, and this achievement shows just how talented and committed he is.”
Gautam's journey to the world championship began at a young age. By channeling his early passion for geography into a competitive sport, he participated in his first competition at just six years old. Over the years, he consistently excelled, earning a fourth-place national ranking in 2023, a second-place ranking in 2024, and ultimately representing the United States in the international competition this year.
The unknown scope of content for the national and international competitions presented a unique challenge. Gautam responded by implementing a comprehensive and demanding study plan. Driven by his deep-rooted passion for geography, he approached the competitions with the determination to perform his best and tried not think about the results.
Gautam’s love for geography extends beyond the classroom. In his free time, he enjoys studying maps, understanding elevations and sea levels and exploring the various aspects of the world around him.
“Avahan’s hard work and commitment sets a shining example and we couldn’t be prouder of his success,” Cisneros said. “I encourage him to keep exploring, keep questioning and keep reaching for the stars. This is only the beginning of his journey.”
