Creekview Law Academy Students Earn Three National Championships

Creekview High School Law Academy students earned three National Championships at the YMCA Youth and Government National Judicial Conference in Minneapolis-Saint Paul this past August.

The conference, where students competed against top teams from throughout the country, wrapped up the competition season for the 2021-22 school year. The National Champions were Top Mock Trial Defense Attorney Sharon Oh, Top Appellate Attorney Shemaiah Dejorge, and Champion Moot Court team Angela Nguyen and Dejorge.

“Both Angela and Shemaiah broke school records by becoming the first students to earn multiple national championship titles for Creekview,” said Jonathan Ray, Creekview HS Law and Criminal Justice Academy director and teacher.  “Angela won the National Judicial Conference last year and was also Top Attorney that year. Shemaiah won Cornell’s Inaugural Moot Court Tournament earlier this year and was also Top Attorney at Duke University Moot Court Invitational earlier this year. The fact that one school (Creekview HS) has racked up this many accolades is quite an accomplishment. The fact that individual students have done so, is unprecedented!”

Students qualified for the tournament by placing in the State tournament last April. All teams prepared all-new cases for the National Judicial Conference competition.

The Mock Trial team consisted of attorneys Alina Kassam and Sharon Oh and witnesses Sophina Boychenko, Amisha Islam, Yashica Nabar, Nicholas Pesqueda, Katlyn Keo, and Chelsea Martinez.

Two Moot Court teams qualified for the tournament. They were Caroline Ready and Bianca Flores and Nguyen and Dejorge. Ready and Flores are Creekview’s first all-freshman team to qualify. The final Moot Court round was held in the Minnesota Supreme Courtroom.

Brian Kang served in a conference leadership position as Chief Justice.
