Fine Arts

More than 120 fine arts students who received top district, state or national recognitions for their chosen art form were honored at the CFBISD Fine Arts Awards Banquet on Monday, May 15, at the Nancy Watten Technology and Event Center. 

“These students’ efforts and dedication are vital to the success of our arts programs, not just in CFB, but also around the country,” said Dr. Mark Rohwer, Director of Fine Arts. “The arts are not an ‘extra,’ the arts are essential. Events like this evening just reinforce that.

Each student honoree was presented a medallion by Superintendent Dr. Wendy Eldredge and was supported by an audience of parents, teachers, campus principals, district administrators and members of the School Board of Trustees. 

Throughout the evening, there were musical performances from the Dewitt Perry Middle School String Ensemble, the Newman Smith High School Vocal Ensemble and the Creekview High School Jazz Ensemble.

“We are truly blessed in this district to have students who have received honors and recognition for their excellence in many different areas of Fine Arts,” said Dawn Valentine, Coordinator of Fine Arts. “Their accomplishments reflect on their campuses as well as CFB. These achievements represent the highest level of performance by both individuals and organizations.”

Athletics

More than 170 athletics students were honored for their state and national accomplishments at the CFBISD Athletics Hall of Fame and Awards of Excellence Gala on Wednesday, May 17, at the Nancy Watten Technology and Event Center. 

Parents, coaches, district administrators and the School Board of Trustees attended the gala. Each athlete crossed the stage and received a medal from School Board President Dr. Les Black and Superintendent Dr. Wendy Eldredge. This medal was given to the students as a sign of their hard work, perseverance and grit for bringing themselves to this level of excellence.

“In CFBISD Athletics we hold our programs accountable to develop our student athletes in the areas of character, academics and athletic performance,” said Michael Ramirez, assistant athletic director. “The result is an astounding 173 athletes recognized at the state and national level for their accomplishments. This is our opportunity to say thank you to our coaches and state-recognized athletes for representing our community and school district at the highest level of achievement.” 

Courtney Okolo, 2012 graduate of Newman Smith High School, was inducted into the CFBISD Athletics Hall of Fame for her successful athletic career in track and field. Okolo won a gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics as part of the 4 x 400 meter relay. She is a two-time World Champion, three-time World Indoor Champion and one-time Pan American Games winner. Okolo won multiple NCAA championships in the 400 meter and 4 x 400 relay while at the University of Texas.

Twelve High School Coach of the Year nominees were also recognized at the event. Tiffany Cherry, Ranchview HS Head Cross Country Track Coach and Assistant Athletic Coordinator, was named the winner. Tyrone Larkins, Athletic Coordinator of Long MS was named Middle School Coach of the Year out of four nominees.

Retirees Terry Smith, Ranchview HS coach and David Allen, Newman Smith HS coach were both celebrated for more than 30 of service they each gave in the field of coaching and teaching. 

“This night is very special as we recognize our award winning athletes for their extraordinary accomplishments on the field of play and in the classroom,” said Renee Putter, Director of Athletics. “We celebrate our Hall of Famer, High School and Middle School Coach of the year as well as our retirees who have given more than 30 years to the coaching and teaching profession. Extracurriculars is what makes the whole child succeed not only on the field of dreams but in life; and we celebrate all types of wins in athletics.”
