CFBISD Principal Profile: featuring Ivan Cedillo

In celebration of Principal Appreciation Month, CFBISD is highlighting the incredible leaders who shape our schools every day. Through this profile series, three principals will share in their own words what inspires them, how they foster strong campus cultures, and how they connect with their communities.

This week, we are featuring Ivan Cedillo, principal of R. L. Turner High School. Cedillo is serving his first year as principal at Turner after holding multiple roles across the district, including associate principal at Newman Smith High School and assistant principal at Turner High School. Furthering his leadership experience, Cedillo spent three years as a high school principal in his hometown of El Paso before returning to CFBISD.

Cedillo brings deep experience, a student-centered mindset, and a commitment to high expectations and community engagement to his role.

Motivation and impact

What's the most fulfilling part of your job that keeps you motivated and excited to come to work every single day?

“For me, it’s seeing students grow—not just academically, but as people. Those ‘aha’ moments, when a student masters something challenging or discovers a new confidence in themselves, are what make every day worth it. Knowing that I get to be part of their journey energizes and motivates me.”

Can you share a specific story or moment that illustrates the impact you and your school community have had on a student or a family?

“One moment that really stands out is a student struggling both in class and at home. With support from teachers, counselors and our school community, we created a plan addressing academic and emotional needs. By the end of the year, not only had the student’s grades improved, but they had become a mentor to their peers—helping others navigate the same challenges they had faced. It was such a powerful reminder of how transformative a supportive school community can be.”

School philosophy and culture

If you could state your personal philosophy of education in one sentence, what would it be?

“Education is about empowering every student to reach their potential while fostering curiosity, resilience, and a sense of belonging.”

A strong school culture starts at the top. What are the key values or elements you prioritize to make your school a supportive, inclusive, and safe place for both students and staff?

“I focus on respect, empathy, transparency, and collaboration. When students and staff know their voices are valued and it’s safe to take risks, that’s when real growth happens. Mistakes become learning opportunities, and everyone feels part of a supportive, inclusive community.”

Community and Leadership

What does community partnership mean to you, and how do you intentionally work to build those vital connections with your school’s families and community?

“To me, community partnership means truly working together to support student success. I stay intentional about communication, involve families meaningfully, partner with local organizations, and create opportunities for students to engage with and give back to their community. It’s about building trust and shared responsibility.”

Being a principal often means navigating challenging situations. Where do you find the strength and guidance to lead with empathy and integrity when things get tough?

“I draw strength from my core values, my faith in every student’s potential, and the incredible support of my team. I try to listen carefully, reflect before acting, and always remember that everything we do is about helping students thrive. That focus helps me lead with empathy and integrity, even in the toughest moments.”

Why did you choose to serve the students, staff, and families of CFBISD, and what makes this district a unique place to lead?

“I had the privilege of working in CFBISD before, and after a three-year absence, when the opportunity came to return, I uprooted my family and moved across the state to serve this community again. That speaks volumes about the district—it’s a place where student growth, innovation, and community truly come first. There’s something special here: the collaboration among staff, the dedication of families, and the resilience of our students. CFBISD isn’t just a district—it’s a community worth coming back for.”

Is there anything else you would like to say?

“I’m truly honored to be part of this community. Every day, I am inspired by our students’ creativity, our staff’s dedication, and the families who partner with us. Together, we’re not just shaping student success but building a stronger, more connected community that will leave a lasting impact.”
