CFBISD fine arts coordinator honored by Texas Educational Theatre Association

Dawn Valentine, fine arts coordinator for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, has been featured in the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TxETA) Administrator Spotlight, a recognition celebrating her more than two decades of service to the arts and education.

Valentine, currently in her 13th year as coordinator, has become a cornerstone of the district's arts community. Her career in the district spans 33 years, including 19 years teaching dance at Newman Smith High School and serving as the fine arts department chair.

“We are proud of her and grateful for all she has done for CFB students and staff for over two decades,” said Mark Rohwer, CFBISD director of fine arts.

The TxETA spotlight highlights Valentine’s extensive background as both an educator and a professional performer. A graduate of Texas Woman’s University and the University of Texas at Arlington, Valentine’s credits include performances in The Sound of Music and The Music Man with the Galveston Island Outdoor Musicals, as well as serving with the professional modern dance company Elledanceworks.

Despite her lengthy list of accolades — including being named the 2013 Newman Smith High School Teacher of the Year and receiving a Dallas Summer Musicals award for Best Choreography — Valentine said the TxETA recognition came as a shock.

“I’ve seen so many amazing theatre educators and administrators recognized by TxETA over the years, and I was genuinely surprised and honored when they chose to spotlight me,” Valentine said.

Beyond the classroom, Valentine has been a leader in state-level arts advocacy. She served on the Texas Education Agency curriculum writing team and is an eight-year member of the Arts & Culture Committee for the City of Farmers Branch.

Throughout her transition from the studio to district administration, Valentine has remained focused on the educators she leads.

“I am truly fortunate to serve CFB Fine Arts alongside such a talented community of creators,” she said. “I hope to foster an environment where every teacher feels supported, valued, and confident in their craft. I want our educators to know they have a dedicated advocate in their corner and that my door is always open as we work together to inspire the next generation of artists.”
