Barbara Bush MS students explore the world of music at Baylor University

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, orchestra students from Barbara Bush MS (BBMS) traveled to Baylor University in Waco for a unique educational experience. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity offered students a glimpse into the world of music at the post-secondary level.

Students had the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Michael Alexander, associate dean of music, performing for his class and observing the Baylor Symphony Orchestra’s rehearsal. The connection to the School of Music was facilitated by BBMS orchestra instructor Christine Towndrow, a Baylor alumna. Her husband, Brian, also a Baylor grad, serves as the Ranchview HS orchestra teacher, and both programs frequently collaborate to support each other.

“I am so proud of our kids,” said Towndrow. “This was a big learning experience for them and they all did such a great job. Experiences like these allow our students to start thinking about post-secondary education opportunities and what they want to do with their future.”

The day concluded with a campus tour, including visits to the science building, School of Business, Student Life Center, Baylor Bear Habitat, Armstrong-Browning Library and more.

"It was truly inspiring to see our students connect with the music and the campus environment," said Laura Abundes, BBMS orchestra assistant. "Experiences like this broaden their horizons and expand their minds."
