Friday, September 16th (Introduction)
This month we will share a series of announcements focusing on different achievements and leaders in the Hispanic community who made long-lasting contributions to our country. Look for placards with inspiring quotes from various Hispanic leaders and a poster series located by the front office.
The poster series presents murals created by Hispanic artists throughout the United States. The muralist movement, often referred to as Mexican Muralism, was a time when painting murals in public spaces flourished. These art installations most often depicted Hispanic heritage with a social or political message. There are also interactive QR codes to explore these murals through Google Maps. Take the time to explore these resources throughout the school and reach out to your social studies teacher with any questions or observations.
Today we leave you with a quote from the president and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, Antonio Tijerino. “You are not lucky to be here. The world needs your perspective. They are lucky to have you.”
Friday, September 30th (Skip September 23rd to allow for Constitution Day announcements)
Today, we continue our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with a reading from President Biden’s presidential proclamation on National Hispanic Heritage Month:
“During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize that Hispanic heritage is American heritage. We see it in every aspect of our national life: on our television and movie screens, in the music that moves our feet, and in the foods we enjoy. We benefit from the many contributions of Hispanic scientists working in labs across the country to help us fight COVID-19 and the doctors and the nurses on the front lines caring for people’s health. Our Nation is represented by Hispanic diplomats who share our values in countries all over the world and strengthened by military members and their families who serve and sacrifice for the United States. Our communities are represented by Hispanic elected officials, and our children are taught by Hispanic teachers. Our future will be shaped by Hispanic engineers who are working to develop new technology that will help us grasp our clean energy future and by the skilled union workers who are going to build it.”
Again, be sure to search for the Hispanic Heritage Month placards and posters around the school to learn more about significant achievements and individuals in the LatinX community.
Friday, October 7th
Did you know, National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures, and contribution of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America? In 2020, the Hispanic population in the United States grew to 18%, making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s second largest ethnic group.
Today’s quote comes from comedian Cheech Marin. He states, “We are a multicultural country - always have been, and to our credit, always will be. It is something that we should be very proud of and embrace.”
Today, take the time to look for and celebrate the impact of Hispanic American’s cultural, political, and social contributions to our country.
Friday, October 14th
October 15th is the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month. Today, we will take time to celebrate and honor the service and sacrifices of the LatinX community to our United States military. The military sacrifice and service of Hispanic Americans stretch back to the American Revolutionary War. Historically, Hispanic soldiers have fought in every single war, both on and off American soil. In total, sixty Hispanic-American service members have received the military's highest award, the Medal of Honor, for their sacrifice for the country. Currently, according to the Minority Veterans Report by the Department of Veterans Affairs, over 1.2 million veterans in the United States are of Hispanic or Latino descent. Today and everyday we are thankful for all of our veterans and also acknowledge the integral role of the LatinX community in defending our nation.
