Blizzard Book Challenge

The CFBISD English Language Arts Department invites all students and families to take part in the first-ever Blizzard Book Challenge, encouraging reading throughout the holiday breaks. By logging their reading minutes, students can help their campus earn the title of Ultimate Reading Champion.

WHEN: Nov. 6, 2025–Jan. 6, 2026
WHO: All CFBISD Pre-K through 12th-grade students are encouraged to participate.
HOW:

  • Pre-K & Kindergarten: May log minutes read aloud by a teacher or parent.
  • Elementary (1st–5th): Students will log independent reading minutes at home or at school in Amira.
  • Secondary (6th–12th): Students will log independent reading minutes at home or at school in Newsela.

Want extra reading points? Students may read additional books and log their minutes using the downloadable reading logs below. Logs should be turned in to the student’s teacher or campus librarian immediately after winter break.

PRIZES: The elementary class with the highest number of logged reading minutes will earn a visit from Kona Ice, and the top readers at the highest-scoring secondary campus will also receive a Kona Ice reward. Every student participating will also receive a certificate for completing the Blizzard Book Challenge.

The campus with the highest total reading minutes will earn the title of the district's Ultimate Reading Champion.

WHY? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes students to up to 1.8 million words a year, strengthens vocabulary and writing skills, boosts reading performance, and builds empathy, cultural awareness, and critical-thinking skills.
