Newman Smith Academy of Building & Design

The Newman Smith Academy of Building & Design is a four-year sequence of courses that helps students become college, career, or military ready without remediation in the areas of Architectural Design, Interior Design, Carpentry, Construction Management, Electrical, and Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning (HVAC).

In The Newman Smith Academy of Building & Design students will receive an elevated academic experience that will include industry internships, mentorships, competitions, in-class speakers, industry field trips, and more. Students will graduate with the necessary skills, certifications, and industry-specific training that is necessary for a high-skill, high-wage, high-demand career.

Strands

Architectural Design

The Architectural Design program of study explores the occupations and educational opportunities
associated with developing, engineering, and designing building structures and facilities. This program
of study may also include exploration into collecting and interpreting geographic information,
researching and preparing maps, and interior design.

Carpentry

The Carpentry program of study explores the occupations and educational opportunities related to
constructing, installing, or repairing structures and fixtures made of wood, such as concrete forms
(including frameworks, partitions, joists, studding, rafters, and stairways). This program of study may also
include exploration into installing, dismantling, or moving machinery and heavy equipment according
to layout plans, blueprints, or other drawings.

Construction Management & Inspection

The Building Codes and Inspection program of study explores the occupations and educational
opportunities associated with cost estimates for construction projects or services to aid management
in bidding on or determining the price of products or services. This program of study may also include
exploration into inspecting structures using engineering skills to determine structural soundness and
compliance with specifications, building codes, and other regulations.

HVAC & Sheet Metal

The HVAC and Sheet Metal program of study explores the occupations and educational opportunities
associated with installing, serving, or repairing heating and air conditioning systems and also the fabrication,
assembly, installation, and repair of sheet metal products and equipment, such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, and furnace casings. This program of study may also include exploration into preparing cost estimates for certain construction projects involving heating and air conditioning and sheet metal.

Electrical

The Electrical program of study explores the occupations and educational opportunities associated
with installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures. This program of
study may also include exploration into installing and repairing telecommunications cable including
fiber optics.

Quincy Clark

Hello! My name is Quincy Clark and I am the Newman Smith Academy of Building & Design Academy Facilitator. In addition to this role I am teaching Construction Technology II this year. This is my 16^th year in Education and my 4^th year teaching Construction. I graduated from Graceland University with a double major in Business Administration and Information Technology. I earned my Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Lamar University. I am very excited to have the opportunity to help your student prepare to be successful in life after high school.

Kenneth Doidge

Howdy! My name is Mr. Doidge. This will be my 19th year in the education field (all in CFBISD). Prior to becoming a teacher, I received my Bachelors of Science degree from Texas A & M and pursued a career in the building materials industry for 14 years. This is my first year at Newman Smith High School where I am teaching Principles of Architecture, Principles of Construction and Civil Engineering & Architecture.

Bryant Nash

Hello my name is Bryant Nash! This is my 9th year of teaching and first year at the high school level. My first 8 years was as at Hendrick Middle School teaching 7th and 8th grade science and also coaching Physical Education. Prior to becoming an educator I worked in construction(concrete), sales and merchandising. I attend the University of Kansas and finished my undergrad with a degree in Sociology. This year I will teach Principles of Construction, coach 9th grade girls volleyball and JVB girls basketball.

Jesus Lopez

Hi, my name is Jesus Lopez and this is my first year teaching. Before this new journey I worked in the construction industry for close to 30 years. I worked at many levels and in many different industries within the industry. I have done everything from being a laborer on a framing crew to being a supervisor in a civil surveying company. I also own and operate my own small business. I am currently working on getting my teaching certification through Dallas College. This year I am teaching Construction Technology I.

Tucker Bilodeau

Hello! My name is Tucker Bilodeau, and I teach Architectural Design, Principles of Architecture, and Principles of Construction. I helped to start the Architecture program here at Newman Smith in the ’21-22 school year and have been excited to see how it’s grown with the support that we’ve received. I have my bachelors and masters degrees from the University of North Texas and outside of school I am a professional audio/visual engineer and professional singer.

Lauren Garcia

Hello, my name is Lauren Garcia. This is my 2nd year of teaching high school and my 11th year in education. Prior to teaching at Newman Smith High School, I served as the Curriculum Coordinator for an Early Childhood Education program. I am a recipient of the International Baccalaureate Diploma and a graduate of Arizona State University with my Bachelor of Arts in Education. This year, I am teaching Interior Design 1.

Justin Braaton

Hello, my name is Juston Braaton and I am in my second year of teaching and coaching, both here at Newman Smith. I graduated from UNT with a degree in Sport Management and have worked in sales, finance, and am currently in the Air Force Reserve. Last year I taught Principles of Construction and now this year I am teaching HVAC I.

Michael Goodwin

Greetings! I am Michael Goodwin, and I teach Principles of Construction and Construction Management. This is my first year at Newman Smith High School. Prior to my career in education, I built and installed cabinets for 10 years. For 6 years, I taught at Starkville High School in Mississippi. I was the Head Band Director at Spence Middle School & TAG Academy in Dallas ISD for 16 years. I look forward to helping scholars learn to build structures, careers, and ultimately, better futures for themselves.

Connected Learners

Students will have the opportunity to participate in the Construction Industry Education Foundation’s (CIEF) Design Build Competition. In this competition students will design and build a structure that serves a purpose in their community. They will receive help from an architectural professional to submit construction documents that their team will build during a two-day competition. Industry professionals will judge teams on design, construction, building code compliance, and safety.

Benefits

The Newman Smith Academy of Building & Design currently offers the following TEA recognized Industry Based Certifications: NCCER Core Curriculum and Autodesk Associate (Certified User) in AutoCAD. In the coming years we will be expanding our certification offerings to include NCCER Carpentry Level 1, Autodesk Associate (Certified User) in Revit and Autodesk Associate (Certified User) in 3ds MAX.
