Dual Credit Course Restrictions
-
Courses offered by institutions of higher education for dual credit are restricted to those contained in the core curriculum of a public institution of higher education, career, and technology education courses, or foreign language courses.
-
Early College High School, any other early college program that assists students in earning an associate degree while in high school, is exempt from this restriction.
-
Texas Administrative Code §4.85 specifies that high school students may not be enrolled in more than two courses for dual credit per semester. Exceptions to this requirement include
-
students enrolled in an approved Early College High School AND
-
Individual students with outstanding academic performance and capability (as evidenced by grade point average, ACT or SAT scores, or other assessment indicators) if approved by the high school's principal and the college's chief academic officer.

Student Eligibility
Student Eligibility for Academic and CTE Dual Credit Courses:
Some students must take the TSIA2 test before enrolling in Dual Credit courses. However, there are ways to be exempt from taking this test. To be eligible for CTE (Career and Technical Education) courses, students must demonstrate their college readiness in Reading and Writing.
The following courses require students to exhibit their college readiness in Reading and Writing, including eligibility in a workforce education dual credit course that is contained in a postsecondary Level 2 Certificate or applied associate degree program:
- Courses that require demonstration of TSIA2 college readiness in mathematics, including eligibility in workforce education dual credit courses contained in postsecondary Level 2 Certificate or applied associate degree programs.
- Courses that require eligibility to enroll in a workforce education dual credit course contained in a postsecondary Level I certificate program or a program leading to a credential of less than a Level I certificate are NOT required to demonstrate college readiness or dual credit enrollment eligibility.
CFB (Carrollton-Farmers Branch) Independent School District has a set of standard prerequisite requirements for each course, such as a minimum score on a placement test or a minimum grade on a specified course that has been taken previously, etc. Suppose a student is exempt from taking STAAR EOC (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness End-of-Course exam). In that case, they should check with the institution for requirements to enroll in a workforce education dual credit course.
Students can be exempt from the TSIA2 assessment if they have benchmark SAT, ACT, or AP scores. Students must complete the application process and have either an exemption or TSIA2 scores in the high school academic advising office by the date listed in the registration packet.
For students who do not meet the TSIA2 standards, CFBISD High Schools allow them to take the TSIA2 multiple times in each subject at no cost to the student. However, if students need to take the TSIA2 outside of school or during the summer, they are responsible for the expense of taking the TSIA2 at an alternative location.
