Teacher Spotlight: CFBISD Elementary Teacher of the Year Summer Garcia

As Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week, the district is recognizing its outstanding educators, including Summer Garcia, the 2024-25 Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Garcia is a passionate second-grade bilingual teacher at Farmers Branch Elementary and a proud CFBISD alumna. She attended Sheffield Elementary, Long Middle School and graduated from Creekview High School in 2015. Her connection to CFBISD runs deep, as she decided to enter the teaching profession because of her inspiring teachers and positive experiences as a student.

“I decided to become a teacher because I wanted to give back to the district and community that gave so much to me,” Garcia expressed. “I was blessed with amazing teachers who helped me grow academically but also personally, and I wanted to offer the same opportunities for my students.”

Throughout her college years, Garcia worked for the After the Bell program at McWhorter and Good Elementary, gaining experience in education. She then began substitute teaching in the district and went on to earn degrees from Brookhaven College and the University of North Texas. For the past five years, she has been a dedicated member of the Farmers Branch Elementary faculty.

Garcia’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the unique contributions each student brings to the classroom.

“Every student brings forth unique experiences, perspectives and strengths to the classroom,” Garcia explained. “I believe all voices have the right to be heard. By fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity, I aim to create an environment where students feel safe, supported and encouraged to contribute.”

A defining moment for Garcia occurred during a literary language lesson using the book Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote, a story about immigration. A student bravely shared a personal connection to the narrative, which resonated with many others in the class. This experience emphasized to her the importance of creating a safe and valued space for every child, where students can learn from each other regardless of their backgrounds or abilities.

Garcia intentionally uses books as “mirrors and windows” to build relationships and understanding in her classroom. Read-alouds and discussions provide opportunities for students to share their cultures, values and experiences.

“I like to remind my students every day that we can learn from everyone,” she said. “I strive to make my lessons accessible by relating them to students’ lives and encouraging peer learning through group projects and discussions.”

When her students leave her classroom, Garcia hopes they remember more than just academic lessons. Inspired by her own impactful teachers, she wants her students to know that they belong and believe in their own potential.

Garcia described her reaction to being named teacher of the year.

“Being named Elementary Teacher of the Year has been a surreal and rewarding accomplishment,” she said. “As someone who has been a part of the CFBISD community since kindergarten, this really is a full circle moment.”

Her love for Farmers Branch Elementary and CFBISD is evident, and she is well-respected by staff, students, administrators and families.

“Farmers Branch really is the best school ever,” Garcia praised. “I am so honored to work in the most amazing district.”
