Newman Smith senior earns prestigious $200,000 U.S. Navy scholarship

Newman Smith High School celebrated an extraordinary achievement as senior Kevin Gilkes was awarded a $200,000 Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship. He received the honor during a special check presentation ceremony in the school auditorium, surrounded by students, staff, and family. This prestigious scholarship will support his pursuit of a Mechanical Engineering degree at Morehouse College, a prestigious HBCU in Atlanta.

The highly selective U.S. Navy scholarship offers a full ride to any participating college or university with an NROTC unit. Gilkes is one of only 14 students in the region to earn the award this year and one of the few nationwide to receive a coveted “golden ticket,” which guarantees selection.

“This is such a big honor,” Gilkes expressed. “I’m excited to make my parents proud and see how this opportunity helps me make an impact in the world.”

Upon graduating from Morehouse, Gilkes will be commissioned as a naval officer and begin his military career. He is scheduled to attend basic training shortly after his high school graduation.

“At Newman Smith, our mission is to graduate all scholars to be college, career or military ready,” said Dr. Stephanie Jimenez, Newman Smith principal. “Today, we get to celebrate that mission in a big way. We are extremely proud of Kevin for this incredible achievement.”

Gilkes has also made a significant impact outside the classroom as a dedicated student-athlete and member of several campus organizations.

“Kevin is the perfect example of a well-rounded scholar and athlete,” said Robert Boone, Newman Smith’s football coach. “He works hard on the field, and that passion is reflected in the classroom.”

Many CFBISD students, like Gilkes, choose to pursue military service after graduation. The district’s College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR) department supports K-12 students interested in exploring military pathways. Seniors committing to service are recognized at campus Senior Walks, and each military branch provides stoles for students to wear at graduation.
