More than 200 students compete in annual Special Olympics track and field meet

More than 200 student-athletes represented the CFB All-Stars on March 27 during the 26th annual Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Special Olympics track and field meet.

The event, held at Standridge Stadium, opened with a procession of athletes escorted by city police. Following the parade, student-athletes led the Star Spangled Banner, Pledge of Allegiance, the Texas Pledge and the Special Olympics oath.

"This meet is the culmination of months of hard work for our incredible athletes," said Leslie Halencak, Special Olympics coordinator.

The opening ceremonies included remarks from Deputy Superintendent Brian Moersch, city officials, Miss Texas Sadie Schiermeyer and Miss Heart of Texas Caroline Cave. A ceremonial torch run, held in memory of former CFBISD athlete Ryan Mehnert, featured a relay of students and school board members who lit the official torch to begin the competition.

Halencak credited the community for the event's longevity and scale.

"The support from our volunteers and the community is what allows this program to remain a model for the region," she said.” We are grateful to everyone who makes this tradition possible for our athletes.”

About CFBISD Special Olympics

Established in 1999 with 16 inaugural members, the CFB All-Stars program has grown to serve more than 230 student-athletes. The district provides year-round programming, including fall bowling and spring track and field. Because of its robust resources, the annual CFBISD meet also hosts athletes from neighboring districts that lack the coaching staff or budgetary resources to hold independent events.
