More than 360 students strengthened their English language skills this summer through Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD’s Learning the Language program.

The initiative, a staple in CFBISD for more than 40 years, is designed to help multilingual learners build the language skills and social connections needed for academic success. Since 1985, the program has focused on creating a welcoming environment for both students and their families.

Throughout the summer, students whose first language is not English develop their language skills through immersive reading, writing, speaking and listening. Rather than relying solely on traditional instruction, the curriculum emphasizes hands-on, collaborative learning through science experiments, art, music and physical education.

“Providing this opportunity during the summer allows our students to build their confidence while feeling completely supported," said Jenny Aguirre, a STEM teacher for the program. "They can take the language skills they develop here and apply them throughout the school year and at home."

While many school systems offer summer literacy programs, CFBISD’s initiative encourages students to practice English in a supportive, low-stakes environment, where they can collaborate with peers, build confidence and develop a sense of belonging.

The program also features a specialized Newcomer Academy for first- through fifth-grade students who are new to the United States. The academy provides targeted, foundational support to help ease their transition into the American school system. This summer, 38 students participated in the academy.
