Grading Procedures

Grading and grades… Students, parents, teachers and principals spend much time talking about grades and what they mean. What is the real purpose of a grade? What evidence supports a grade? What motivates an individual to make good grades?

A grade is all about learning. We want to determine if the student understands the state-required standards and the district curriculum required for that grade level or course. Basically, we are measuring student achievement.

We in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District are always looking for ways to improve the educational quality found in our classrooms. We believe that students must understand what they are learning in school because they need to re-connect and apply it to real-life situations. CFBISD’s grading procedures must assess a student’s learning and his real understanding of the content.

Progress reports and report cards are anticipated to be available in Parent Self Serve by the dates listed in the chart below.

August 12, Tues.	School Begins • All students meeting the UIL requirements of promotion or earned credits are eligible. These requirements are: • Jr. High – student promoted from previous grade • Soph – student has earned five (5) credits • Junior – student has earned 10 credits or earned five the previous year • Senior – student has earned 15 credits or earned five the previous year
September 18, Thurs	- End of First Six Weeks • All grades must be checked.
Sept. 18 – Sept. 25	Grace Period – Students who failed a class are still eligible.
Sept. 25, Thurs.	At the end of the school day, anyone with a failing grade on Sept 18 becomes ineligible for the remainder of first grading period.
October 10, Fri.	End of first grading period (9 Weeks) • All grades must be checked
Oct. 10 – Oct. 20	Fall Break: From the end of the school day on the 10th until school begins on the 20th, all students are ACADEMICALLY eligible to participate.
Oct. 20 - Oct. 27	Grace period for those who fail a subject and a waiting period for those who become eligible at the end of the first grading period.
October 27, Mon.	Students failing any course on October 10 become ineligible at the beginning of the school day. Students previously ineligible become eligible if they passed all subjects.
November 7, Fri.	Three-week grade checks for all ineligible students.
Nov. 7 – Nov. 14	Waiting period
November 14, Fri.	Ineligible students who passed all subjects as of November 7 become eligible at the end of the school day.
Nov. 21 – Dec. 1	From the end of the school day on November 21 until the start of the school day on December 1, all students are ACADEMICALLY eligible to participate.
December 5, Fri.	Three-week grade checks for all ineligible students.
Dec. 5 – Dec. 12	Waiting period
December 12, Fri.	Ineligible students who passed all subjects as of December 5 become eligible at the end of the school day.
December 19, Fri.	End of second grading period (8 Weeks)
Dec. 19 – Jan. 6	Winter Break: All students are ACADEMICALLY eligible to participate from Dec. 19 at the end of the school day until the start of the school day on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
Jan. 6 – Jan. 13	Grace period for those who fail a subject on Dec 19 and a waiting period for those who become eligible at the end of the second grading period.
January 13, Tues.	Ineligibility begins at the end of the school day or eligibility is regained.
January 26, Mon.	Three-week grade checks for all ineligible students.
Jan. 26 – Feb. 2	Waiting Period
Feb. 2, Mon.	Ineligible students who passed all subjects as of Jan 26 become eligible at the end of the school day.
February 13, Fri.	Three-week grade checks for all ineligible students.
Feb. 13 – Feb. 20	Waiting period.
Feb. 20, Fri.	Ineligible students who passed all subjects as of February 13 become eligible at the end of the school day.
March 5, Thurs.	End of third grading period (9 Weeks) • All grades must be checked
Mar. 5 – Mar. 12	Waiting period.
March 12, Thurs.	Students failing any course on March 5 become ineligible at the beginning of the school day. Students previously ineligible become eligible if they passed all subjects.
Mar. 13 – Mar. 23	Spring Break: From the end of the school day on the 13th until school begins on the 23rd , all students are ACADEMICALLY eligible to participate.
April 2, Thurs.	Three-week grade checks for all ineligible students. (If bad weather day is used; moves to Friday April 3rd)
Apr. 2 – Apr. 9	Waiting period
April 9, Thurs.	Ineligible students who passed all subjects as of April 2 become eligible at the end of the regular time of the school day. (If bad weather day is used; moved to Friday April 10th)
April 24, Fri.	Three-week grade checks for the ineligible students.
April 25 – May 1	Waiting period
May 1, Fri.	Ineligible students who passed all subjects as of April 24 become eligible at the end of the school day.
May 21, Thurs.	Last day of school. End of the fourth grading period. Students with the correct number of credits will be eligible when school begins in the fall. Those needing additional credits may earn these during the summer.
