As we begin January 2005, it seems appropriate to reflect on the past 12 months. We in C-FB ISD have been truly blessed during the year 2004 and throughout the existence of public schools in our community. Although we did experience some difficult situations in 2004, we understood the importance of working together.
First, the wonderful individuals who have chosen C-FB ISD as their professional home seem to always find ways to help our students achieve. To the C-FB ISD staff, thank you so very, very much for all of the support that you give your students, their families and your colleagues.
A newly formed organization, Friends of Texas Public Schools, was created to boost public confidence and raise morale in Texas public schools. Organizers of Friends of Texas Public Schools say that Texas public school teachers and students deserve a lot more praise for their outstanding dedication and hard work. And, they do. Fortunately, the C-FB ISD community believes in public education and the work of our local educators. But, that’s not always the case. In one of his recent columns, The Dallas Morning News columnist Steve Blow featured the work of Friends of Texas Public Schools, and he wrote.
“This perception that schools are a mess is partly our fault – the media, I mean. It's our job to highlight problems. But we're not so good at also conveying the bigger picture, the overall success story.
Politicians are also to blame. One of the easiest ways to win votes is promise to fix "failing schools." Never mind the truth.
And let's face it. The problem is also in ourselves. Happy school stories are soon forgotten. The outrageous ones linger and linger.”
The reality is that like C-FB ISD most public school systems are showing positive results. Wonderful, committed adults have joined the public education profession because they believe that our public schools are the cornerstone of our great country. And, fortunately, as the superintendent of C-FB ISD, I have the opportunity to share with you monthly the success of our students, faculty and staff and schools. I encourage you to visit the website of Friends of Texas Public Schools to learn more about this grassroots’ effort of letting our state know that there is much to celebrate in our Texas public schools as we continue to improve student achievement.
Here are some reasons for our C-FB ISD community to celebrate public education.
- C-FB ISD is among the 40% of Texas public school districts earning at least one Gold Performance Acknowledgment from the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
- C-FB ISD’s Gold Performance Acknowledgment is for the Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IP) category. C-FB ISD exceeded the state requirement for 15% of 11th and 12th graders taking at least one AP or IB examination AND 50% of 11th and 12th grade examinees scoring at or above the criterion. In C-FB ISD, 31.2% of 11th and 12th graders took at least one AP exam and 68.3% of those students scored a 3 or higher.
- Our schools also received Gold Performance Acknowledgments in these areas and the number of schools earning these distinctions is in parenthesis: AP/IB (2), Attendance (11); Recommended High School Program/Distinguished Achievement Program (RHSP) (2), Commended Reading (12), Commended Math (10), Commended Writing (12), Commended Science (7), Commended Social Studies (2).
- For the second year in a row, the district received a Superior Achievement rating by meeting all 21 indicators measured by Schools FIRST (Financial Accountability Rating System of Texas).
- Texas leads the nation in the size and scope of its gifted and talented program. It is one of the top six states in the nation in the percentage of public primary schools with a gifted and talented program. C-FB ISD is one of four Texas school districts with a TEA Recognized Gifted and Talented Program.
- Our Council of PTAs continues to be honored by the Texas PTA as “Outstanding Large PTA Council” – an award the group has received for three years in a row.
I love C-FB ISD and the community we serve. I am so thankful to the past educational and community leaders who set the standards of educational quality and established our district’s core values. I so appreciate the PTAs and what the members have done and will continue to do for this district.
I know that the year 2005 will be a great year where our students continue to achieve. We are facing some challenges, but I know with your support we will overcome them because we believe in the importance of public education. |
