Since the Superintendent's
Report column began in 1997, the December column has given me the opportunity
to reflect on the many blessings that the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent
School District staff, students, families and community have witnessed
during the year.
For our back-to-school staff general assembly, we selected the theme,
"The Faces, The Heart, The Magic - C-FB." That theme line really
emphasizes what makes our school district so special -- the people as
well as the care and support that they give to our students and families.
We are blessed with wonderful people who have chosen C-FB ISD as their
professional home. Regardless of the job, individuals go the extra mile
to help students become more confident learners. I am amazed at the many
staff members who come to work early, stay late or return on the weekends
just so our schools can be positive environments for students.
I am so proud of how our educational team has faced this school year.
Along with the many wonderful events, we've experienced some tragic and
tough situations. But, no matter what the challenge or issue, our team
simply joins forces to help their colleagues, students and families get
through the tough times. To the C-FB ISD staff, thank you so very, very
much for all of the support that you give your students, their families
and your colleagues.
The most important C-FB ISD group is our students. Our young people realize
the importance of being involved and giving to others. Our students are
not only learning the skills that they need for post-high school education
and the world of work, but they are also learning what it takes to be
caring, servant leaders.
The compassion that I've witnessed is awe-inspiring, and there are so
many examples. Our campuses give to Metrocrest Social Services because
they understand the importance of giving to those in need. The Vivian
Field Middle School staff and students continue to support our troops
in Iraq. Sgt. Mark Leach, the school's karate teacher who was called to
active duty, and his platoon will be receiving letters and care packages
for the holidays. These are just a few of the many parcels and letters
that Mark and his fellow soldiers have received from the Viking community
since he was deployed.
As we celebrate this holiday season, we in C-FB ISD should give thanks
for the thousands of students who come to school every day prepared and
understand the true meaning of character. To be known as a person of character
is one of the greatest accomplishments of life. In essence, character
is what you do when no one is watching, and we have many, many students
of character.
As educators, we are very fortunate to have such active Parent Teacher
Associations. The local school units along with our Council of PTAs compose
the largest child advocacy organization that we have. We know how wonderful
our Council of PTAs is to our schools, students and families, but the
Texas PTA also recognizes their efforts, and for the second year in a
row, the Texas PTA named our Council of PTAs an "Outstanding Council
of PTAs."
The C-FB ISD educational team will always remember October 25, 2003, as
the day when the community said "yes" to a $300,165,000 bond
referendum. The 79% approval rating along with the increase in the number
of voters "made our day." You, the citizens, told our team how
much you appreciate what they do every day for your students. The victory
shows how much this community believes in public education and sets an
example of support for our neighboring school districts.
I love C-FB ISD and the community we serve. I am so thankful to the past
educational and community leaders who set the standards of educational
quality and established our district's core values, including the celebration
of diversity and endorsement of service.
I value today's educational team because they have the tools and talents
that make our schools the beacons of hope and learning for today's students.
Our students face challenges and opportunities every single day, but I
know that that they will excel in their learning, service, and activities.
As the year 2003 ends, all of us in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent
School District wish our students, families, and the entire community
a wonderful holiday season. I know that the year 2004 will be a great
year where our students continue to achieve, and no matter what challenges
we face, we will overcome them because we believe in the importance of
public education.
