Our public schools do a remarkable job of educating children, but the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD educational team does not work alone. Thankfully, we have many supportive organizations, businesses and individuals who work ‘shoulder-to-shoulder’ with us to help our students. Today I want to focus on two local organizations that continue to be positive about public education.
First, the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Educational Foundation was organized in 1997 by community leaders who are staunch public education backers. They wanted our six communities to join forces not to only raise additional funds for our teachers and students, but also to raise community awareness about the “good works” of C-FB ISD.
One Foundation program that meets both goals is the STAR Awards program. This program gives students and their families a way to say “thank you” to special C-FB ISD faculty and staff members while at same time raise funds for our schools.
The Foundation created the STAR Awards program based on a suggestion of teacher Lani Mango. Her idea was to have a project that encouraged parents and others to honor faculty and staff members by contributing to the Foundation. With that idea, the STAR Awards program was born in 2001.
Our team values the Educational Foundation, and one indication of that value is that through the 2004 Employee Contribution Campaign, the staff has donated almost $58,000. We know that by pooling our donations together, we can provide opportunities for our students that the district’s budget can not support.
How does the STAR program work?
It’s very easy. You simply make a monetary contribution to the C-FB ISD Educational Foundation in the person’s name you wish to honor. Once the Foundation receives your gift, the C-FB ISD team member receives a specially designed STAR pin and acknowledgement card. With your contribution, you may also send the Educational Foundation Office a personal note or card that can accompany the standard acknowledgement card.
Contributions received from STAR recognitions support programs that directly benefit teachers, students, classrooms and schools. And, since the foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community organization, donations are tax deductible as defined by the IRS code. Persons interested in the STAR Awards program can find more information on the C-FB ISD Educational Foundation website, or they can call the Foundation office at 972-466-6188.
A second district supporting organization is the Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs). The local school PTA units along with our Council of PTAs compose the largest child advocacy organization that we have. Our Council of PTAs is wonderful to our schools, students and families, but their excellent support has also been recognized by the Texas PTA. For three years in a row, the Texas PTA has named our Council of PTAs an “Outstanding Council of PTAs.”
PTA members do so much for our individual schools and district. Most school PTAs meet at least one time per month, with programs that feature children's performances, family events or speakers on timely parenting or educational issues. Additionally, our PTAs offer other events throughout the year that support their school and offer social opportunities, teacher appreciation or parent support and information.
The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Council of PTAs is an umbrella board of officers and chairmen who parallel the many PTA positions at local schools. The Council's main mission is two-fold: provides training, resources and support for local PTA units and oversees several district-wide projects.
The Council of PTAs and Foundation have joined forces for the Fourth Annual Gently Used Book Sale. Please mark February 25, 26 and 27 on your calendar now so you can attend, but these two groups need your help right now. The Gently Used Book Sale Committee needs all kinds of items to make the sale a huge success. These include: children’s books, adult fiction and non-fiction books, cookbooks, coffee table books, CD’s, videotapes, and books on tape.
Each school as well as the Administration Building (1445 North Perry Road, Carrollton) is serving as a drop-off point. Schools are conducting book drives so please feel free to take your books to any C-FB ISD school. Collection boxes are usually located near the school’s main office. If your business or organization is interested in conducting a drive for the sale, please call the Educational Foundation Office at 972-466-6188.
In C-FB ISD, every child and employee are valued because the success of the individual makes us a great team. I encourage all of us to model district character values of Respect, Pride, Integrity, Service, Responsibility, Cooperation, and Citizenship and to remember that “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”
I applaud the Educational Foundation and PTAs for their commitment to our school district. Thank you, C-FB ISD community for believing in public education, and I hope that you will support these two organizations that are huge backers of our students, staff and schools. |
