Superintendent's Column

Dr. Annette Griffin

Superintendent of Schools

The focus of the Texas Legislature for the next few weeks will be on public school finance. At this point, no one knows what the outcome will be, but we all know that the financing of Texas public schools is extremely complex. I encourage you to monitor the legislative action so that you will be knowledgeable about the total school finance system in Texas and how that system affects the district’s financial picture.

Your School Board and district staff remain fiscally responsible and continue to review every area to identify ways to operate more efficiently. We have made and will continue to make some tough financial decisions until a better total school finance system is in place. While C-FB ISD is making these difficult choices, we must continue to pressure state elected officials to make changes in the school finance system. Those of us who believe in public education must rally together and demand that our state elected officials adequately fund public education.

During this school year, C-FB ISD has made major reductions to “balance the 2004-05 budget.” The March column gave an update on the budget.

As we await the state’s decisions on school finance, our school district is wrapping up the 2003-04 school year. Our students and teachers have just completed the second year of the state-mandated TAKS. Our C-FB ISD educational team has put forth tremendous efforts in helping our students learn the skills and knowledge that they need. The parents, volunteers and other community members who have assisted our schools this year have played huge roles in helping students achieve higher and higher levels. Thank you to everyone involved.

So many wonderful and amazing success stories happen every day in the district that it is impossible to list all of them. The accolades mentioned below merely represent the many, many achievements of our students and staff.

  • The Creekview girls’ soccer team won the state 5-A soccer championship and was named fourth in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA/Adidas).
  • The DeWitt Perry Middle School Robotics Club is heading to the national competition for the second year in a row. The 17 students and their teacher David Culp will travel to San Jose , California , for the Botball National Conference and Competition, July 26th – 28th.  What is so amazing about this club is that our middle schoolers compete against high school students.
  • Lauren J. Laustsen, Newman Smith High School senior, and Holli M. Rachall, Creekview High School senior, are among the 500 semifinalists in the 2004 Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from more than 2,700 candidates on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character, and involvement in community and school activities. The finalists will be announced later in May.
  • Forty-six of our seventh graders have earned state or national recognition from the Duke University Talent Identification Program. That means that these students’ scores equate to college-bound seniors taking college entrance exams.
  • For the 6th straight year, a C-FB ISD team is in the Global Finals of Destination Imagination (DI). The Blalack team is making its second trip to the finals, but is competing in a different category.
  • C-FB ISD was named as one of the “Top 100 places in America for Music Education” by the American Music Conference Communities for Music Education. Only 6 other Texas school districts ( Denton , Fort Bend , Katy, Lewisville , Munday, Plano ) made the list.
  • The Newman Smith debate team qualified for the National Forensic Tournament. Also on their way to nationals are R.L. Turner seniors Bryce Adams (Lincoln Douglas Debate), Justin Joseph (Lincoln Douglas Debate) and Jonathan Hyman (Original Oratory) and Creekview students Ben Hendricks and Louie Andrade (Cross Examination Debate).
  • Newman Smith senior Jaclyn Brewer is one of 12 girls who have been accepted to the dance division of The Julliard School in New York City .
I am so proud of what our students, staff and schools accomplish each and every day. I know that they will continue to achieve as we close out the 2003-04 school year. But, these achievements would not be possible without the continued support of parents, families, and the community as whole. So on behalf of the district’s educational team and students, I thank you -- C-FB ISD community -- for believing in public education.
