Other Types of Financial Aid

• To provide a grant of money to enable well-prepared eligible students to attend public and private nonprofit colleges and universities in Texas.

Scholarships - awarded according to need and/or achievement.

• Applications are available from the Secretary in the Counseling office.  All current scholarships are listed monthly in the Senior Newsletter. Local scholarships are also available.  Listen to announcements and read Senior Newsletter for details. Please read over qualifications for scholarships carefully.  Should you have a question see the Counseling Secretary or your Counselor.
• Since your financial aid situation can change from year to year, you MUST apply for financial aid each year.  Always keep copies of forms you submit to the school, government or lender during the financial aid process.

The Process

• Get a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from the Counseling Center or apply on-line.  You may not apply prior to January 1st  of each year.  However, you should apply as soon as possible. Find out your colleges priority deadline for applying for aid. Contact the college Financial Aid Office and make sure all information has been received. You will receive a summary statement (SAR).  Review it carefully.  If necessary make corrections and return to processor or mail correct SAR to Financial Aid Office of the college you are interested in attending. The college will review your SAR and put together a package of financial aid it can offer to you.  You will be informed via an award letter. If you wish to accept the offer, sign the award letter and return (keep a copy). If you wish to decline, notify the college immediately so the financial aid can be offered to other applicants.
• A portion of your financial aid award may include Work Study Program.  This allows you to work on campus usually for minimum wages.

At the colleges you are interested in:

• Write to the Financial Aid Officer to inquire whether the college has its own Financial Aid Form which must be completed in addition to the FAFSA.  Be sure to ask about general scholarship information.
• Write to the Chairman of a given department in a college to inquire about the application procedures for departmental scholarships.

Athletic Scholarships / NCAA

• Students who are involved in sports and think that they may qualify for an athletic scholarship need to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse decides if your courses and ACT/SAT scores meet the requirements. This process should be done during the Spring of your Junior year. A certain grade point and ACT score are required before a student can accept an athletic scholarship. You can pick up Clearinghouse forms from the registrar on your high school campus.
