District Award for Teacher Excellence (DATE)
About the TEA DATE Grant Program The State of Texas created a teacher-incentive grant program, District Awards for Teacher Excellence (DATE), in which C-FB ISD will participate. C-FB ISD will receive $1.73 million from the state for the program for the academic results from the 2008-09 school year. The grant money will be distributed during the fall of 2009. DATE provides monetary rewards to teachers for positively impacting student academic achievement.
The District was awarded $1,734,958 from the State of Texas. The DATE grant requires school districts to match 15% of the grant money awarded. These amounts may increase as other districts choose not to participate in the DATE grant program. The grant requires that at least 60% (Part I) of the grant funds are appropriated to teachers who directly impact student achievement. The other 40% or less (Part II) may be paid to employees not in Part I or to pay stipends for teachers in hard to staff content areas.
C-FB ISD's DATE Grant Plan The District created a District-Level Planning Committee (DLPC) to create a plan for the implementation of the DATE grant for C-FB ISD. The DLPC members included teachers, administrators and district personnel from elementary, middle and high schools.
C-FB ISD's number one goal is to achieve a Recognized rating under Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The DLPC believes that DATE is a vital tool to help the district achieve this goal. The DLPC also believes that the District should use the DATE grant to encourage the District and campus to achieve an Exemplary rating through TEA. The objectives of the DATE grant include:
- Provide monetary incentives to teachers and librarians in support of District-wide goals.
- Encourage collaboration while promoting mutual accountability across the district and across the individual campuses.
C-FB ISD's DATE plan involves three levels of reward. Teachers can receive monetary rewards for achievement at the district level, campus level and/or grade level/content area. Working as a team is an important aspect of the C-FB ISD culture therefore, the awards are not based on the specific results of an individual teacher, but rewards for collaboration and teamwork. C-FB ISD's DATE plan includes both an achievement model and a growth model. Like AEIS, reaching a specific level of growth in student achievement qualifies for a monetary reward as well as meeting a specific achievement level.
The DLPC presented the District's plan for the DATE grant to the Board of Trustees on March 27, 2008. The School Board approved the DATE grant plan at the Recognized level and added additional money for reaching the Exemplary level. The DLPC sent the DATE grant plan to the Texas Education Agency for approval on April 3, 2008. The grant application was approved by the Texas Education Agency on September 26, 2008.
