| Smith Named "Athlete of the Week" as Trojan Girls Earn Split in Rockwall |
The Newman Smith girl's swimming and diving squad battled hard against its divisional rivals in Rockwall this week. Senior Genette Bergman turned in a strong performance on the diving board, winning the event with her highest score ever in a 6-dive meet (230.65). The girls team captain also pitched in on the winning 200 free relay. Junior Annie Smith won the 100 free, and placed second in the 200 free, while senior Nina Lim took the 50 free. On the boy's side, team captain Kevin Giles won the 100 free and placed second in the 200 free, just missing the school record in that event. Freshman Connor Shackelford won the diving event, with an impressive score of 187.80. The girls (3-3) beat Rockwall by four points, but lost to Heath by just five points. The boys (1-4-1) lost to Heath by a mere 11 points, and could not keep up with a strong Rockwall team, falling by 30 points. For her outstanding work ethic and attitude, Annie Smith was named the team's third "Athlete of the Week." |
