Windows Media

What is Windows Media and why do I need it?
Windows Media is just one of many formats for delivering pre-recorded and live streaming motion video and audio to your computer. The vast majority of videos on our site, including streaming content and video-on-demand are in Windows Media format.

Windows? I’m a Mac user! How am I supposed to view your video content?
Microsoft stopped making the WMV Player for the Mac some time ago, but you can still easily view our WMV files via Quicktime using Flip4Mac, which is a free program.

How do I know when I need it?
Windows Media files and links typically end with the extension .wmv. If you link to video content, and nothing happens, it’s most likely because you don’t have the proper video software installed. You may end up with a non-descript icon on your desktop that has a file name ending with .wmv – the tell-tale sign of a Windows Media file. Once you have the proper software installed, clicking on such links should launch the appropriate software automatically.

How much is this going to cost me?
Both Microsoft’s Windows Media Player and Flip4Mac are free players. Another free program for the Mac that will view WMV files as well as other traditionally Windows-only formats is VLC.
