honor the anniversary of the tragic death of
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Enrique
“Kiki” Camarena as Red Ribbon Week. On this twenty-second

death, parents in Illinois and Virginia were
determined that Agent Camarena’s life and death
would not be in vain. They urged citizens to
wear the symbolic Red Ribbon, and the Red Ribbon
campaign was born. Today, the Red Ribbon Campaign

during this observance presents a unified and
visible symbol of our commitment to free our

More than 1.4 million high school juniors entered the 2008 National Merit Program by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The semifinalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program include the highest scoring in each state. There are 16,000 semifinalists in the 53rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The semifinalists have an opportunity to compete for 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards totaling $34 million.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship, high school seniors must have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by the school administrator, and earn similar SAT scores and advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists will become finalists.
Approximately half of those
finalists will receive a Merit Scholarship, earning
the Merit Scholar title. According to the National
Merit Scholarship Program, "Merit Scholar designees
are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments,
and potential for success in rigorous college studies."

Wrapped Up in Reading
Furneaux principal Jim Cunningham
was wrapped like a mummy by students who completed
the summer reading list. Mr. Cunningham and the
Furneaux librarian, Donna Durrant, creatively
encourage students to read from the Texas Bluebonnet
Award Reading List. This year, students who completed
the reading were able to help warp Mr. Cunningham
into a mummy. As a part of the celebration, Mr.
Cunningham read a mummy book to the students
at the special awards assembly. "I truly believe
that the students who read over the summer are
ready for school and will do better the following
year. Reading is one of the most important skills
we can give a child," said Mr. Cunningham.

constructed by the students as the students cheered
her on during a school assembly.
