Exiting the Language Program

This school year, May 2012, an English Language Learner (ELL) may EXIT the language program by demonstrating English fluency in:

  • The English WMLS-R oral test
  • Meeting Expectations on the English grade level version of the TELPAS Reading
  • Being a proficient English writer on the TELPAS writing or the Texas state assessment in writing
  • Having minimum or no modifications on grade level assignments with passing grades on the student’s report card
  • Obtaining the teacher’s and the Language Proficient Assessment Committee recommendation to EXIT the language program

Pre-K & First Grade

§89.1225 (i) A student may not be exited from the bilingual education or English as a second language program in pre-kindergarten through kinder. A district must ensure that limited English proficient students are prepared to meet academic standards required by TEC, §28.0211.

Academically Successful – 2nd Grade ESL

§89.1225 (j) For determining whether a student who has been exited from a bilingual education or English as a second language program is academically successful, the following criteria shall be used at the end of the school year:

  1. the student meets state performance standards in English of the criterion-referenced assessment instrument required in the Texas Education Code, §39.023, for the grade level as applicable; and
  2. the student has passing grades in all subjects and courses taken.

The student should receive a letter of “EXIT” notification when he/she meets the Exit criteria.

Note: Students may be Exited:

  • At the end of the school year
  • During the first four weeks of school
  • or during the school year if they are transferring from a district that has already Exited them (Exit documentation should be provided)
