English as a Second Language Program

English as a second language (ESL) is intensive English language instruction by teachers trained in recognizing and working with language differences. The ESL program provides intensive instruction that develops academic vocabulary orally, reading vocabulary as well as written comprehension skills in English.

Secondary Newcomer Program - is a self-contained intensive English program for students who have been in the USA less than 12 months and who scored “Non-English Speaker” on the oral test for identification. Students that qualify participate in the program for one school year and then return to their home campus.

  • Middle school newcomer program – available at all middle schools except Blalack.
  • Blalack newcomers attend Long Middle School.
  • High school newcomer program – available at all high schools
  • Newcomers English Language Development (NELD) is an ESL course offered in high school to immigrants not born in the USA with 4 school years or less.
