Career Awareness for Elementary School Students

Junior Achievement's Elementary Program for Second Grade

All elementary schools

2001-02 School Year

128 classes

Elementary School Program: Students learn concepts and skills at each level that build on those taught in preceding grades. The program is designed to show students the relevance of education to the workplace as well as to prepare them for secondary school and lifelong learning.

128 business partners who will teach 5 units to a class over a semester. All Pathways.

Junior Achievement's Middle School Program

Career Exploration Classes

500 students in program.

Junior Achievement's Middle Grades Program stresses the importance of an education and staying in school while introducing students to economic concepts and information about the world of work.

Businesses teach 6 - 8 week programs of 45-55 minute lessons. Volunteers are primarily recruited from the appropriate industries. All Pathways.

Junior Achievement's High school Program realizes that students are positioning themselves for their future; many have already decided on further schooling or entering the work place. Whatever their choice, they will face challenges as they struggle to establish their independence and find their place in the world.

A business representative visits the class once a week for 8-12 weeks per semester to demonstrate application of the theory taught by the classroom teacher. All Pathways.

40 juniors and seniors in the Academy.

Students are placed in nine-week to one-year clinical rotations that provide a real-world setting that compliments their field of interest in the biomedical industry.

Businesses in the biomedical and agricultural science fields to provide placements for students. Health Science Technology and Agriculture Science & Technology Pathways.

The curriculum for careers in hospitality management was designed for students interested in restaurant management, culinary arts, etc.

Students have an opportunity to talk about and interview for employment opportunities with company representatives. Sponsored by Metrocrest Chamber of Commerce.

50+ businesses participate as future employers; 50+ businesses needed to talk to classes about interviewing skills prior to job fair. All Pathways.

Marketing Yourself

"Marketing Yourself" is a course that prepares students to transition from school to work through a variety of job-related activities and skills such as resume and portfolio development, career planning, interview, and job seeking. A community service component provides connections for the students to develop volunteer and leadership opportunities.

One business a week to conduct a mock employment interview with 1 - 4 students. All Pathways.

TIP connects industry and business sponsors with selected senior students for a professional level internship experience. Students shadow and participate with a business partner for 8-10 hours/week for a semester to develop the knowledge of concepts and procedures used in the world of work.

The Professional Pathways Program has identified seven Pathways. Each pathway has a sub-committee that consists of business representatives from different careers to create a "network of networks." These sub-committees recruit for, participate in and support the activities and events within the district involving businesses.

8 - 10 businesses per Pathway to serve as sub-committee members. All Pathways.
