Committed to a vision of every student graduating
college-ready
We in the Carrollton-Farmers
Branch Independent School
District are committed to
a vision of every student
graduating college-ready.
We begin working on this
vision as early as pre-kindergarten.
As educators, we know the
importance of giving students
choices based on their interests
and educational paths. That
is why, C-FB ISD is extending
options for our high school
students.
We are so fortunate
to live and work in a public
school system that has a
rich history of believing
that every child can learn
and that each individual
educational path is valued
equally.
Pre-Kindergarten
Our state had the foresight
to require public schools
to offer pre-kindergarten
programs beginning in the
1985-86 school year for students
who were in the most danger
of falling behind. National
leaders in educational research
say that a child's knowledge
of the alphabet in kindergarten
is one of the most significant
predictors of what that child's
tenth grade reading ability
will be.
And, we know
that children who enter school
without these very necessary
literacy skills run the risk
of starting behind in kindergarten
and often they stay behind.
That is why, our district
has been transitioning its
half-day pre-kindergarten
program to a full-day program.
We know that when young children
have an environment that
is rich in language and literacy,
they obtain the essential
building blocks to learning
how to read.
Our pre-kindergarteners
spend time learning about
math, science, social studies
and fine arts. When our four-year-olds
leave the pre-kindergarten
classrooms, they are ready
for kindergarten.
Parents
are a child's first and most
important teachers. Through
our pre-kindergarten program,
we begin to develop a relationship
with parents as our pre-kindergarten
teachers encourage families
to become involved in the
schools with such groups
as PTAs.
METSA (Math,
Engineering, Technology and
Science Academy)
We are adding a fifth academy
for our high school students
– METSA. I am really excited
about this latest option that
will be available next fall
at R. L. Turner High School
(RLT). Although at RLT, the
academy is an option for any
C-FB ISD student who is interested
engineering. The facility is
under construction and the
building has been designed
for flexibility, team-teaching,
project-based learning, exhibition
and presentation of student
work.
Our instructional
team has designed a four-year
sequence of courses that
includes college preparatory
mathematics and science courses
plus project-based coursework
that will introduce students
to engineering and engineering
technology.
International
Baccalaureate
The International
Baccalaureate (IB) is another
option for high school students
and will give them the opportunity
to earn college credits while
in high school. This program
is a demanding two-year,
pre-university course of
study. Designed for highly
motivated students, the International
Baccalaureate is another
option that C-FB ISD wants
to provide for students but
is a different approach to
the Advanced Placement courses
or dual credit courses.
C-FB ISD is
in the planning stages to
offer the International Baccalaureate
program at Ranchview High
School. The Ranchview staff
has been involved in trainings,
and the district has turned
in the preliminary paperwork
indicating our interest in
offering the program at Ranchview
High School. Our final application
will be submitted in June
2007, and our goal is to
have the program fully implemented
by fall 2008.
Thank you,
C-FB ISD community for believing
in public education. Your
belief in a solid public
school system allows us to
provide the varied educational
choices that today's students
need. The C-FB ISD educational
team appreciates your believing
in this district's vision
that "every student
can graduate college-ready." You
are helping fulfill the dreams
of our students – a quality
education.
