Five years ago, two of the district’s staunchest advocacy groups formed a partnership and created the Gently Used Book Sale. In that time, the Gently Used Book Sale has become a community event that promotes literacy and provides funding for the C-FB ISD Council of PTAs and Educational Foundation.
Almost two hundred people stood in line awaiting the opening of the Fifth Annual Gently Used Book Sale, and the first sale day set records. The 2006 Gently Used Book Sale exceeded all goals despite being held on a February weekend hit by wintry weather. This year’s sales offered more books and raised more funds than ever before. Although the Council and Foundation are still tallying revenues, preliminary reports indicate that sales and sponsorships will exceed $50,000.
Coordinating the sale on behalf of the Council of PTAs were Sue Avery and Beth Mauch. These two outstanding volunteers did a superb job of organizing, collecting and preparing the sale. They encouraged student groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other community organizations to become involved in book drives and more. Prior to the book sale opening, more than 1,000 volunteer hours were logged sorting and counting books and setting up the location.
I also salute the C-FB ISD Educational Foundation Board of Directors led by Executive Director Kayla Adams and Assistant Pam Pena. The Foundation sought out sponsors and located the space for this year’s sale. The combined efforts of the two organizations helped C-FB ISD expand its resources.
The sponsors for the 2006 Gently Used Book Sale included Al Dia, Cencor Realty Services, The Dallas Morning News, Channel 8, SHW Group, Inc., Southwest Airlines, Town North Bank, PlainsCapital Bank, Cousins Properties, Hewlett Packard, Hibernia Bank, IKON Office Solutions, Ducky-Bob’s Party & Tent Rentals, Sam Pack’s Five Star Ford, DART, and Cousins Subs.
The sponsorship dollars, which total $11,000, will be awarded in a grant directly to the district to support math and science staff development initiatives. The sales will be divided between the Council of PTAs and Educational Foundation to support such major projects as student scholarships, teacher classroom grants, student enrichment grants, Post Proms of Creekview, Ranchview, R. L. Turner, and Newman Smith High Schools, PTA Clothes Closet, and the multi-cultural PTA brochure.
The 2006 Fifth Annual Gently Used Book Sale serves as a wonderful partnership model. We have two outstanding 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations collaborating for the benefit of our students and staff. And, then working along side them are local businesses, the news media, student groups, scouting groups and individuals.
I always tell my superintendent colleagues that what makes this district so special is the willingness of this community to join forces for public education. The C-FB ISD community truly values each child and wants all students in our classrooms to succeed. The rewards for those who helped make the 2006 Gently Used Book Sale so successful will be long-lasting. To all who volunteered in this wonderful event, remember “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”
