For the Thanksgiving Holidays, CFB-TV Producer Emily Olson visited E. L. Kent Elementary, Dan F. Long Middle and Ranchview High Schools. For the segment, she asked the students, “What are you thankful for this holiday season?"
The answers were many; however, the most frequent answers included, “I’m thankful for my family and friends," “my teachers," the people who have helped me become the person I am today," “I’m thankful to live in America," and “freedom and the troops."
As I watched these students share their thoughts, I was reminded of the resolution that the Board of Trustees adopted almost 10 years ago. That resolution encouraged the C-FB ISD educational team to reinforce the teaching of six character values and ethics that a citizen committee had identified as being reflective of our community. They are respect, pride, integrity, service, responsibility, cooperation and citizenship. Through that video and other action of our students and staff, it is apparent that those values are alive and well in our school district.
Metrocrest Social Services
An agency that has helped our community for over 30 years is the Metrocrest Social Services (MSS). MSS and the school district have a strong partnership because we know that by working together we can better support families. Through this Holiday Season, MSS can use the community’s assistance either through donations or volunteers.
For clubs, schools, departments, scout troops, neighborhood associations, any community group or families looking for a service project, (MSS) has its December Holiday Program through Dec. 23. Last year, the agency assisted 690 families.
The December Holiday Program includes food baskets and holiday gifts for infants, children, teenagers and families. The program also has numerous volunteer opportunities. For more information about volunteering or needed items, please visit MSS’s website at http://www.metrocrestsocialservices.org. You may also contact volunteer coordinator Dana Wilson at 972-446-2100 ext. 19 or dwilson@metrocrestsocialservices.org or executive director Bunny Summerlin at bsummerlin@metrocrestsocialservices.org or call 972-446-2100, ext. 16.
Thank you, C-FB ISD Community & Staff
October and November are major fund-raising months for the C-FB ISD Educational Foundation. October is the C-FB ISD Employee Contribution Campaign Drive. The C-FB ISD team understands the importance of uniting as one powerful force. And, that statement was validated again in the 2005 campaign, when we raised $79,015. C-FB ISD has a culture of “doing what’s right" and an educational team who truly cares about this district and the children we serve.
And, if there’s a C-FB ISD educational team member who you wish to say “thank you," then please consider the Foundation’s STAR program. Contributions received from STAR recognitions support programs that directly benefit teachers, students, classrooms and schools. Persons interested in the STAR Awards can find more information on the Foundation’s website (www.educational-foundation.org), or they can call the Foundation office at 972-466-6188.
At the “Morning for Children" breakfast, the Educational Foundation raised $100,000. The sponsorships, live and silent auction, and raffle raised over $87,000. And, thanks to the generous donation of Shawn Bhagat, owner of American Oil and Gas, the Foundation will meet its $100,000 goal. Mr. Bhagat has agreed to donate the difference between what the breakfast raised and the $100,000 goal.
Gently Used Book Sale
Make plans for the Fifth Gently Used Book Sale, which is coordinated by the
C-FB ISD Council of PTAs and Educational Foundation. The dates are Feb. 16-19. The sale will be at the Trinity Valley Shopping Center, Josey Lane at George Bush Turnpike in Carrollton. Right now, the Gently Used Book Sale Committee needs all kinds of items to make the sale a huge success.
Each school as well as the Administration Building (1445 North Perry Road, Carrollton) is serving as a drop-off point. Schools are conducting book drives so please feel free to take your books to any C-FB ISD school. Collection boxes are usually located near the school’s main office. If your business or organization is interested in conducting a drive for the sale, please call the Educational Foundation Office at 972-466-6188.
In C-FB ISD, every child and employee are valued because the success of the individual makes us a great team. I encourage all of us to model district character values of respect, pride, integrity, service, responsibility, cooperation, and citizenship and to remember that “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
