On Feb. 25, the Individual Speaking event portion of the of the National Qualifying Tournament was held at Creekview High School. Newman Smith Debate student Tanya Rajan qualified for the for the National Championship Tournament by being ranked 1st in all 6 round of the tournament. This is Tanya’s 2nd year to qualify for nationals in Extemporaneous Speaking.
This is the 13th time in 15 years that Newman Smith Debate has qualified for the National Championship Tournament.
The National Tournament will be in Indianapolis in June.
The team also had 3 students place as alternates:

The Debate and Student Congress portion of the qualifying process will be held in April.

On Feb. 25, four Creekview debaters qualified for the National Forensic League Speech Tournament to held this June in Indianapolis. Seniors Kevin King an dMitchell Ferguson, along with sophomores Patrick Lyons and Kevin Kehl represent the top 1% of all students who participate in competitive speech across the nation. To qualify, students must place among the top competitors at one of NFL’s 107 district tournaments. Qualifiers will compete for more than $200,000 in college scholarships in one of eleven events.
King qualified to compete in the Original Oratory category. Ferguson will be competing in Humorous Interpretation, while Lyons and Kehl will be competing in Duo Interpretation.
Sra. Stacy at Newman Smith High School gave me a new outlook on the world, that up to that point I had not seen. I will never forget her.

On Feb. 15, the Barbara Bush PTA hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Reception to recognize the efforts of its volunteers. The Karate Demo Team, under the leadership of Coach Oliver, presented a program showcasing the talents of its dynamic students.
Barbara Bush principal, Matt Warnock, and volunteer Rahfekia Evans, were honored as recipients of the Texas PTA Lifetime Member Award given to acknowledge those individuals who give extraordinary support to the students and school through their dedicated efforts. They received certificates and commemorative pins. Volunteers donate their time by helping with concessions at sporting events, dances and UIL Academic competition, assisting staff at the school, and volunteering at numerous school activities. Barbara Bush has over 70 volunteers that support the efforts of its students and staff.

On Mar. 1-3, the Creekview High School Speech team will head to the Texas Forensic Association State Tournament with 21 qualifications. In the past 3 years, CHS has had 10 State Finalists. During the 2011-2012 season, the Mustangs have taken 9 tournament championships.
The Mustangs will host a state preview exhibition at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23 in room B100 at Creekview.

The Boys’ Basketball teams from Creekview Highschool, Smith High School and Ranchview High School are all advancing to the bi-district round of the UIL state play-offs beginning the week of Feb. 2.
CHS will be the 2nd place representative from District 9-4A. They will take on the 3rd place representative from District 10-4A, McKinney North, at Plano East Senior High School, 3000 Los Rios, Plano, at 7:30 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 21. Creekview will be the home team for this game.
NSHS clinched the 4th place slot from District 9-4A. NSHS will play Highland Park, the District Champion from 10-4A, at Prosper High School, 301 Eagle Drive, Prosper, at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 21.
RHS finished 12-3A play in third place. Their play-off opponent has not yet been decided as Princeton, Lovejoy, and Frisco Lone Star finished 11-3A play in a three way tie for first place. They will have a seeding tournament on Thursday and Friday nights this week, and Ranchview’s play-off information will not be available until their opponent is known. CHS will play either Feb. 20 or 21, depending on their TBA opponent.
On Feb. 11, nine Creekview students attended the regional Texas Art Education Association’s Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE). Two students, Trang Tran and Yasly Flores both had pieces that went on to the state level. Students Lynsay Brisco, Claudya Cardenas, Whitney Couch, Adea Dounley, Samantha Hyvarinen, Brigid Ludwig, Jessica Zumaya, as well as state qualifiers Flores and Tran all scored 4′s on their work, which is the highest score awarded.
On Feb. 11, students taking Japanese at Creekview High School participated the 15th Annual Dallas Japanese Speech Contestm sponsored by the Dallas Japanese Association, the Japan-America Society DFW and the Japanese Teachers Association of Texas. They were competing against 75 other students in the Dallas area. Five students from CHS placed, and two students, Kennedy Schleicher and Tristan Arizala qualified for State. The Texas State Speech Contest will be held in Houston on Mar. 10.
